THE
ROOSTER
by Deacon Tony Martucci
In
October, Pat & I made a Pilgrimage to Rome, Fatima, Lourdes & Paris. It was a
grueling, but very spiritual journey. While we were in Portugal, I noticed a plethora of
images of black roosters with many brightly colored designs on their bodies. There were
statues, paintings, dinner-ware, flags, etc. all with the same image.
I
asked a salesperson what the meaning of the rooster was in Portugal. Here is his
explanation.
The
rooster is the symbol of Portugal, much as the eagle is the symbol of the United States.
There is a legend that a pilgrim was making his way to Santiago de Compostela, when he was
stopped by some locals and accused of a serious crime. The pilgrim protested that he was
innocent, but they did not believe him and sentenced him to death.
The
pilgrim told the people that there was a dead rooster hanging down in the market place. As
proof of his innocence, the pilgrim told the people that in the morning, the rooster would
come to life and sing.
The
following morning, the rooster did, indeed, sing and the pilgrim was released to continue
his pilgrimage to Compostela.
I was
very impressed with the story and recalled the words of our song, De Colores. “Sings
the rooster, sings the rooster with his kiri, kiri, kiri, kiri.” Could it be that our
roots go back to the legend of the Portuguese pilgrim?
THE
COMMUNION OF SAINTS
by Deacon Tony Martucci
In November, we
celebrated the Feast of ALL SAINTS. Do you
personally know any saints? Are YOU a Saint? Yes, you are. You are part of the Church
Militant. When I was growing up, I learned about the Communion of Saints, and in the
Apostles Creed we say, “I believe in the Communion of Saints.”
The
communion of Saints is a Catholic doctrine that holds that the Body of Christ is “the
spiritual union which joins together the faithful on earth, the souls in purgatory, and
the saints in heaven” in the organic union with Christ as its head and in a constant
exchange of supernatural offices.
The Saints
Triumphant- are those souls who are in Heaven, e.g. Peter. Paul, Theresa, Joan
(canonized and not canonized). We often pray to the saints for our needs- lost keys, our
children’s safety, etc. We ask the saints to intercede for us.
The Saints
Suffering- are the souls in purgatory. We often pray for our loved ones who have
died, asking for the forgiveness of their sins, and for their salvation. In turn, those
souls pray for us, their loved ones left behind.
The Saints
Militant- are those on earth, who try to live lives of grace and bring about the Kingdom
of Heaven. Within the Church on earth, there is a shared exchange of examples, prayers
merits and satisfactions. Between the Church on earth on one hand and purgatory and heaven
on the other, there are works of charity, prayers, intercessions and adorations. (Catholic Encyclopedia)
As you well
know, our struggle to bring about the Kingdom of God is not against mere flesh and blood,
but against Satan and his fallen angels who want to increase their numbers by leading as
many people away from God as possible.
The Church is
like a great ship, bombarded and attacked by enemy vessels surrounding it- the media,
materialism, Godless-government, secularism, and immorality, to name just a few.
A great battle
is raging. The ship is damaged, but continues on its course. Nothing could be truer as, by
the Holy Spirit, the course of the Church has been steadfast in these troubling days. Pope
Benedict XVI says, “Nothing will deter the truth. The Church…intends to continue
to raise her voice in defense of mankind, even
when policies of state and the majority of public opinion moves in the opposite direction.
Truth, indeed, draws strength from itself and not from the amount of consent it
arouses.” Vatican Mar. 20, 2006
As members of
the Church Militant, you and I need to take our place in the battle to win souls for
Christ and to change our world into His Kingdom. St.
Paul tells us in Ephesians:
“Be strong in the Lord and in
the strength of His might. Put on the full armor
of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our
struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers,
against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in
the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you
will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand
firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT
ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod your feet with the PREPARATION
OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which
you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take THE
HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:10-17)
Notice all the
weapons we have available:
BELT OF TRUTH-
Jesus said,” I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE.”
BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS-
“Love one another as I have loved you.”
SHIELD OF FAITH- Our
Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed.
HELEMT OF SALVATION- won for us
by Christ’s death and Resurrection
SWORD OF THE SPIRIT- (the Word
of God)
PRAY on all occasions. BE
ALERT….PRAY FOR ALL THE SAINTS.
Pray ALWAYS. We
have tremendous power in our prayers. Read about the power of prayer in Scripture. Just a
few examples:
Exodus 17:10-12
- Moses & the Israelites in battle with Amalek
Matthew 8:5-13 - The Centurion
asking Jesus to cure his servant
Luke 22:39-46 - Jesus and the
Disciples in the Garden of Olives
Acts 12:1-17 - The Christian Community and
Peter in Prison
In every case,
intercessory prayer brought about the intervention of God in the world in a particular
situation. We KNOW the power of prayer. Our world is in a terrible state. We have not seen
such immorality or chaos since the fall of Rome. Some tell us that we are living in the
end times. Jesus once asked, “When the Son of Man comes again, will He find any faith
on the earth?” Only you and I can answer that question.
Time after time,
in each of the appearances of the Blessed Mother, she begs us to pray for peace, for
forgiveness, for mercy. “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the Good
News.” On Ash Wednesday, we will hear the words, “Turn away from sin, be
faithful to the Gospel.”
We know that
Jesus has already won the victory. We have to bring as many of our friends, family and
neighbors with us as we possibly can. Let us promise that each of us will PRAY and FAST
with the Communion of Saints to win our struggle against the forces of evil and to bring
about the Kingdom of God.
MY PRAYER
by Joe Vella, Sr.
Author of creation I am grateful for the dawn,
Because of you I am able to meet the morn.
Thank you for including me in your divine plan.
A role for each of us to play since time began.
I am set apart because you are a kindly God,
Justice seeking as from Aaron’s rod.
Your kindness and patience is never ending.
Forgive me for being misguided and offending.
Restructure my errant attitude,
Replace it with oceans of gratitude
Permit me to be fruitful and of use
Rid my brain of obstacles and excuse.
Assist me to reassess and grasp your Word,
So that your call is distinctly heard.
Free my senses, enhance my intellect
That I may be among the elect.
Would your thoughts infuse into mine,
And our spirits eternally combine.
Let me not bleat or snivel at your appeal.
Rather your beauty and love reveal

PRAYER FOR THE CURSILLISTA
Lord, help us to use our time,
our talents, our lives for the building up of Your Kingdom. Instill courage into our
initiatives, good judgment in our choice of the proper means, and that determination which
assures success even in times of seeming failures.
Move us above all discourtesy,
sensitivities and rivalries, which not only discourage and divide us, but lead us away
from loving You and each other. Help each one strive for the gift of Your unselfish love
that will embold us to prefer the more humble tasks and rejoice in the good done by
others.
Lord, let all see Your
attractive goodness marked on all our faces, Your warm accents in all our works and in our
community, a unity and a holiness that proclaims Your living presence in our midst. Amen.
St. Paul, Patron of the Cursillo. Pray for us.
